Energy Psychology is the name for a constellation of powerful techniques or therapies that are fast and effective in reducing and even eliminating anxieties, fears, phobias, physical pain and negative feelings. They are quick, painless and have an high success rate for most people. And they do not involve medication, painful reliving of trauma or long-term treatment. These therapies are called Energy Therapies or Energy Psychology because they are all forms of body-oriented psychotherapy and they all work with the body’s energy field.
The initiator of energy psychology, psychologist Roger Callahan, Ph.D., developed a process called Thought Field Therapy (TM) in 1980. Thought Field Therapy (TM) (TFT) is an integration of the fields of psychotherapy, applied kinesiology and acupressure meridians. Following the lead of Dr. Callahan, others have developed treatment techniques which also integrate psychotherapy and the acupressure meridians. Acupressure and acupuncture therapists use pressure on the meridians to treat physical problems. Most of the Energy Therapies focus on the meridians to treat emotional concerns. All of these treatments are based on the theory that the human body is run by an electrical meridian system similar to that which ancient Chinese medicine practitioners have used for centuries. Tapping on these meridians brings relief.
What are Thought Fields?
If you are accustomed to “positive thinking” it can seem strange to focus on negative thoughts or feelings, but tuning into the “thought field” of whatever is upsetting is the first step in energy psychology. Once the “thought field” is the focus of the mind, then the tapping on meridians can send electrical impulses from the nerve bundles at the meridians through the brain and through this “thought field” creating a new neural pathway that has no upsetting emotions connected to it. This new pathway is neutral.
What does Energy Psychology treat?
The Energy Therapies are used to treat a wide range of issues including: physical pain, stress, anxiety, fears and phobias, trauma, anger, depression, migraines, fibromyalgia, asthma and addictions. They are also used to improve personal performance in academics, business and sports by removing anxiety, doubt and negative self-talk. The Energy Therapies are a group of techniques used in psychotherapy to alleviate or eliminate psychological suffering. Once fears, trauma, anxiety, panic and strong negative emotions are reduced, other work can be done in therapy on personal goals, relationships and other healing.
Advantages of Energy Therapy
Charles Figley, Ph.D., of the Psychological Stress Research Program and Clinical Laboratory at Florida State University reported five advantages of using TFT (and energy therapy) over all other tested therapeutic approaches in reducing the impact of trauma. Figley stated:
1. It is powerful. All clients (in his study) received nearly immediate relief and this appears to be permanent.
2. It can be taught to anyone so clients can treat themselves and others.
3. It appears to do no harm.
4. It does not require the client to talk about their troubles.
5. It works.

Objections and problems
It may seem odd to tap yourself in order to feel better because this practice is unusual in American culture. Also, it can be difficult to remember to use the tapping techniques since we are far more accustomed to taking a pill, talking, exercising, drinking, eating or smoking to relieve upset feelings. Energy Therapies is just one group of techniques that are used in psychotherapy to alleviate or eliminate psychological suffering. Once fears, trauma, anxiety, panic and strong negative emotions are reduced, other work can be done in therapy on personal goals, relationships and other healing.
